Transition Talk, a key to survival

Recently we had a family discussion about what date in June we would leave Kenya, where we’ve lived and served for almost six years. Ana, age 18, stated she wants to leave around the 20th, to allow time for goodbyes, organizing, and packing following her May 30 high school graduation. Alita, age 16, wants to leave around the 7th, so that she doesn’t risk running into school friends who were already granted a farewell. Plus she wants to travel for two weeks in Europe and still get to Elkhart a week before going to Mennonite Convention in California. Mom and Dad want to leave around the 15th, to allow for closure after hectic school schedules and a few days with friends in Europe, but still travel before the airline rates are hiked for summer traffic. Alena, age 13, doesn’t want to leave Kenya at all, but if she had to choose a time in June, it would be 11:59 p.m. on June 30.

Maintaining a Transition Mindset

My husband Tim and I arrived in Hungary in December 1994, one month after getting married. We left this summer, both of us now decidedly middle-aged and with three daughters in tow. When asked how long we planned to stay in Hungary, for many years our answer had been “until God calls us to go somewhere else.” We had reached a level of lingual, relational, and cultural fluency so that staying was the easy option. Hungary felt more like home than anywhere else.
