  • Service term length or program: Long-term, Mission internship
  • Region of service: Latin America
  • Location: Cusco, Peru and surrounding region
  • Ministry category: Education, Leadership training, Health

Every EMM worker's primary focus is to make disciples of Jesus. Serve as a medical professional working with the Peruvian Mennonite Church in its healthcare ministry among the Quechua.

Regional vision
We focus on making disciples who make disciples, trusting and praying that vibrant communities of worship and mission will begin and grow as the number of disciples increases.

Responsibilities
Work with the local church to develop and give guidance to health programs of the Peruvian Mennonite Church. Specific activities will depend on the qualifications and interests of the applicant in coordination with the local church's vision, and may include the following:

  • Train church-based health promoters.

  • Become involved in a children's nutrition project and health checks for students at the PROMESA school.

  • Work at La Fuente outpatient clinic (in coordination with local church leadership; physicians only).

Environment
Peru is a relatively stable country with attractive ancient cultural sites and a breathtaking landscape. Cusco, Peru, is at a high altitude, and the adjustment often takes some time for foreigners. The culture is friendly, but not in the same gregarious and warm way that Central American cultures are known for. There is an openness to outsiders and to the gospel, despite evident spiritual oppression. The school, PROMESA, was originally begun by EMM missionaries to provide a quality Christian education to underserved children.

Supervisors and colleagues
The medical worker will work with the EMM team as well as the local church, and possibly PROMESA school or La Fuente clinic staff. Supervision will come from the Peruvian Mennonite Church, the EMM country team leader, and Regional Representatives Mike and Nancy Hostetter.

Skills and experience
The medical worker will need experience with preventative healthcare and the ability to educate others on this subject. College degree highly recommended. Applicants must have intermediate proficiency in Spanish. Those interested in longer-term work are preferred. All applicants should be able and willing to work on a multicultural team.
