A Christmas greeting
Written by Ryan Showalter, director of Discipleship Ministries

Warmest Christmas greetings to you! The Christmas season is a time of anticipation – looking forward to celebrating Christ’s birth, being with family and friends, and giving gifts to those we love.

This Christmas, what will we give? The lyrics of the Christmas song, The Little Drummer Boy, say, “Our finest gifts we bring… To lay before the King… So to honor him.” What gifts might we lay before the King of kings this year?

ImageOne such gift is an attitude of thankfulness. We can look back with gratitude on how God has led us through this past year. At Discipleship Ministries we reflect on how we’ve seen God at work – stories of transformation during training times, and stories of lives being changed on the field. It’s amazing to see how God chooses to use us when we are obedient to him.

Other gifts to give the King are our prayers and our financial gifts to further his kingdom around the globe – to give others the chance to hear the good news of Jesus’ birth and resurrection.

Also this Christmas season, we offer you a special opportunity to give our time in service to the King. We’re organizing a disaster response GO! team to serve in the Philippines from December 26 through January 10.

This past September, in the course of only 9 hours, millions of people were affected when Typhoon Ketsana hit the Philippines and was then followed by three more typhoons. Hundreds were killed. Now almost three months later, the storms’ havoc is still evident and thousands are still hurting. We have the opportunity to go be the gift of Christ’s hands and feet in an area of great need.

We are looking for a group of young adults and adults who are willing to get their hands dirty, and who are willing to build relationships while working hard. Do you have a valid passport and the desire to give a different kind of “gift” this year?

The application deadline is December 14 – just a week and a half away. We’re still determining the costs. Apply by calling Sherrie Ober at 717 898-2251 (ext. 269).

Whatever type of Christmas gift you choose to give this season, I hope you find great joy in celebrating Jesus’ birth and the hope that he brings to all of us.

Merry Christmas from Discipleship Ministries!
