Local youth groups participated in service projects during the day.
“Thought let’s wait and see was a dumb ‘ol saying / but them old saints know that’s part of the plan / you can’t see the way so you hold his hand /  think of that, why God wanna walk with a man,” rapped Christian artist ASON in his song “Lay Them Down” at the March 20 Youth Rally at the High Fine Arts Center at Lancaster Mennonite School.

ASON, Thurman “TC” Curtis, a youth pastor at Capital Christian Fellowship, performed in the Saturday evening concert co-sponsored by Eastern Mennonite Missions, Lancaster Mennonite Conference, and Lancaster Mennonite School.  Approximately 300 young people attended the concert.

“He has a real passion for both rap and youth ministry and has a deep desire to see youth grow closer to God,” said Jon Heinly, campus youth minister for LMS and Lancaster Mennonite Conference. “He provided an excellent show and involved the youth by doing competitions like reciting scripture memory and through a dance-off on the stage.”

“Everyone seemed to especially enjoy the interactive elements,” Heinly said. “It was also exciting to see our racial/ethnic congregations well represented.”

Auntie Anne’s was the corporate sponsor for the event. “We are incredibly grateful for their generous underwriting,” Heinly said. “It allowed us to offer the evening concert free of charge.”

Local youth groups also took part in a food drive collecting 1,200 pounds of food for Water Street Ministries and Bridge of Hope Lancaster.

“There was a lot of excitement among the youth as they brought their food in,” Heinly said. “It was quite a pile!”

Youth groups were also encouraged to participate in service projects either earlier in the day or during the week.

“Several groups helped to do spring cleanup at Black Rock Retreat,” Heinly said. “One group volunteered at Cornerstone Youth Center in Elizabethtown. Some visited the elderly from their congregation. Another group helped their bi-vocational pastor around the farm.”

“Jesus called us to go into Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the ends of the earth,” said Ryan Showalter, director of Discipleship Ministries at EMM. “The Youth Rally is an opportunity to challenge young people to grow in their faith walk and to live lives of service wherever God leads them.”

“Our desire is always for youth to grow closer to God through an event like this,” Heinly said. “It was especially exciting to see how many of them responded to the invitation for prayer at the end of the event. I also was thrilled with the way youth engaged in both service projects and food donations, which gave them practical ways to show Christ’s love to those in their communities.”
