WILLOW STREET, Pa. — The sight of alpacas, the sound of bongo drums, and the scent of curry: on July 7 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., Eastern Mennonite Missions’ (EMM’s) Global Fair will once again bring international flavor and culture to the Hans Herr House in Willow Street, Pa.
Global Fair, an open-air missions and culture festival, is an annual community summer event put on by EMM. The event allows community members to meet EMM missionaries and interact with global sights, sounds, and flavors from Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, and North America.
This year’s Global Fair will feature longtime favorites like the baby alpacas from Eastland Alpacas in Mount Joy. There will also be a number of newcomers, including Bridge — an award-winning cultural exchange startup by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur — and handicrafts from My Peruvian Treasures.
As always, Global Fair will feature authentic international foods served by local cultural restaurants and ethnic groups. Sip on masala chai from the social impact business Upohar, try a home-cooked Ethiopian platter prepared by members of Tinsae Kristos Evangelical Church, snack on a caramel-filled Dutch “stroopwafel” cookie, and more.
Global Fair is family-friendly, with multiple children’s activities. This year, kids can make slime and enjoy a bubble machine, among other things. Children 12 and under can complete a challenge to win free soft serve ice cream. Families will be invited to fold paper cranes to add to a large paper crane sculpture, joining together hundreds of colorful cranes as a symbol of peace.
So whether you’re a young family, a person with a passion for overseas missions, or someone who’s been bitten by the travel bug, EMM is excited to welcome you to Global Fair!
Global Fair is taking place on Saturday, July 7, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Hans Herr House in Willow Street, Pa. A one-dollar donation is suggested. Learn more here, or contact Jessica Fellenger with any questions.
