The March 2016 attacks in Brussels hit close to home. It’s in the heart of our European continent, and we have stood exactly where the blast happened. I am horrified that this stuff continues in our world. But what really concerns me today is that isolated events like these will provide continued fuel to the fire of fear, mistrust, and hate of Muslims.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Forty leaders gathered to explore ways to combat anti-Muslim speech and behavior July 11-13, 2016, in Washington, D.C. Among the 40 academics, activists, Christians, Jews, journalists, Muslims, non-religious, and politicians present was Jonathan Bornman, global consultant serving with Eastern Mennonite Missions.

After leading a group of Community Mennonite Fellowship congregants through sections of David W. Shenk’s “Approaches to Islam” video course, that’s just what Ron Geib did. And after a class filled with enthusiastic learning and discussion, about 20 other churchgoers are better prepared to take those simple, significant steps toward making Muslim friends.

“For me, the Alhambra became a metaphor for what can happen when people work together peacefully across religions and cultures,” said David Shenk, after visiting the historic Moorish palace while on a trip to promote Christian-Muslim relations in Spain. “When there is intercommunal peace, the result can be phenomenal beauty.”

Shenk, a global consultant with Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), served as the keynote speaker for this year’s Christian Medical and Dental Society (CMDS) National Conference on May 26–29, 2016. The theme of the 2016 conference, which was attended by Christian medical professionals from Canada, was “Welcoming strangers.”

LITITZ, Pa. – Many first-time meetings between members of the different faiths are characterized by “a tremendous amount of fear,” says Jonathan Bornman, a member of Eastern Mennonite Missions’ Christian/Muslim Relations Team who has facilitated many interactions between Christians and Muslims. As part of his efforts to reduce fear and increase understanding, Bornman, along with his colleague Andres Prins, held a workshop titled “Understanding your Muslim Neighbors” at Lititz Mennonite Church on February 27, 2016.
