English teacher | Peru

Every EMM worker’s primary focus is to make disciples of Jesus. Teach at PROMESA, a bilingual Christian school in Cusco. ESL training or experience preferred. The school year runs from March 1 through mid-December. Some proficiency in Spanish is necessary.

Regional vision
We focus on making disciples who make disciples, trusting and praying that vibrant communities of worship and mission will begin and grow as the number of disciples increases.

  • Teach for at least one school year (the school year runs March–December; the English teacher will arrive in mid- to late January).
  • Teach 3–5 classes per week for a weekly commitment of about 30 hours.
  • Ideally, teachers will stay for several years, but short-term participants are also welcome.
  • Participation in one of the local Mennonite churches is expected.

All long-term and short-term missionaries engage in Launch, EMM’s discipleship training course, before and during their assignments. Phase one of Launch includes personal discipleship activities through online modules. For phase two of Launch, participants spend one to two weeks learning alongside their Launch cohort (a group of others preparing for service) before heading to their outreach locations. In phase three of Launch, workers continue to connect online with their Launch cohort for up to a year as they navigate ministry in their country of service.

Peru is a relatively stable country with attractive ancient cultural sites and a breathtaking landscape. Cusco, Peru, is at a high altitude, and the adjustment often takes some time for foreigners. The culture is friendly, but not in the same gregarious and warm way that Central American cultures are known for. There is an openness to outsiders and to the gospel, despite evident spiritual oppression. The school, PROMESA, was originally begun by EMM missionaries to provide a quality Christian education to underserved children.

Supervisors and colleagues
The English teacher will work with the EMM team, as well as PROMESA staff and local church members. Supervision comes from PROMESA leadership, the EMM country team leader, and Regional Representatives Mike and Nancy Hostetter.

Skills and experience
A college degree is necessary; teaching experience strongly recommended. Applicants should have a heart and vision for working with children, and the ability to work on a multicultural team. They must also have intermediate proficiency in Spanish.
