Global Fair volunteers

  • Region of service: North America
  • Location: Willow Street, Pa.

Global Fair is a one-day event hosted annually by Eastern Mennonite Missions at the Hans Herr House. There are dozens of exhibits showcasing the culture, food, and customs of different regions of the world. EMM workers also have displays to share their experiences of serving the mission of God around the globe. Would you like to help make the July 13 Global Fair successful in one of the following ways? Volunteer groups and individuals are welcome.

Setup crew

Time: 8–11 a.m.
Volunteers needed: 12

The setup crew will work with several EMM staff members to make final preparations for the opening of the fair at 11 a.m. This crew will place trash cans, set up folding canopies (which are very easy to set up with four people), label all the exhibitor tables, place tablecloths in the eating tent (you can even make centerpieces out of dandelion fuzz if you so choose), place numerous flags and banners, help exhibitors unload vehicles, and tackle other last minute details as needed. This may require some lifting and using a ladder. It does not require heavy lifting.

Parking crew
Time: 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–3 p.m.
Volunteers needed: 12

The parking crew will work with a particularly charming group of EMM staff members to assist attendees with parking their vehicles as efficiently as possible in the designated parking areas in field and grassy areas around the Hans Herr House. This will require the ability to stand for the shift length, sunscreen to keep you healthy and beautiful, and sturdy shoes for walking on uneven ground. Colorful and attractive safety vests will be provided.

Greeting crew
Times: 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–3 p.m.
Volunteers needed: 6

The greeting crew will be stationed at the entrances to Global Fair and will be responsible for welcoming guests, collecting donations (There will be a sign and buckets.), and giving out brightly-colored and well-designed event maps. This will require a smiling face and a friendly disposition.

Children’s activities crew
Times: 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–3 p.m.
Volunteers needed: 20

The children’s activities crew will be responsible for leading and supervising the children’s activity stations. This may include helping with crafts, painting small adorable faces, applying temporary tattoos to sweaty little arms, running through bubbles, or coordinating water games. This crew will need creativity, patience, and possibly a dry set of clothes. This crew would be perfect for youth groups looking for a day of service and fun. And we do mean FUN!

Ice cream crew
Times: 11 a.m.–1 p.m. or 1–3 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 4

The ice cream crew will help scoop hand-dipped ice cream and run the soft-serve ice cream machine. This will involve interaction with customers, collecting money, and standing for much of the shift. Also required, strong scooping muscles and a great deal of self-control.

Teardown crew
Time: 3– 5 p.m.
Number of volunteers needed: 10

The teardown crew will assist EMM staff in cleaning up and restoring the Hans Herr grounds to its normal beauty after the event has ended around 3 p.m. This will involve taking down the canopies (this is a carefulness and speed competition!) and signs, collecting trash bags and putting away trash cans (you will get all your steps in for the day), returning the children’s activities to their tubs, reloading the EMM truck, helping exhibitors pack up (extra leftover treats are usually involved here), and general cleanup. This will require some lifting and walking on grassy surfaces and lots of winning!

You can volunteer as a group or as an individual and participate in one of these crews. All volunteers will receive Global Fair Bucks that can be redeemed for food at the event, EMM swag, and great memories.
